Illustrated Dictionary of Hermès Carrés Valeur&Value by Genviève Fontan
It is a pleasure for me to present to you this book that you were no longer waiting for. It is now available on the Arfon website. An easy-to-consult book that gives the essential information for each Hermès Square.
Nearly 220 Carrés have been added to the database of Carrés d'art IV, a book published in 2020. All new Squares introduced are indicated by an icon ("+" in a circle).
EDITORIAL
The BIFUR font, created by A.M. Cassandre, an illustrator who designed Carrés for Hermès, has quite a story. It is told in every detail. It's fascinating!
The Bifur was used for the cover of this book, while in the 1930s, Hermès introduced it in its advertising.
Let's go around the Square between 2020 and 2024
The list of 100 cm Carrés is growing. This format announced "for men", probably because of the designs, is finally perceived as a mixed format. The designs of the Carrés are certainly rather virile, but the 100 cm Carré worn by a feminine woman offers a seductive contrast!
The nature of textiles and the formats of the Squares are evolving. The arrival of 70 cm cashmere and silk has been on the test bench since 2023.
The double-sided Carrés are multiplied from existing creations or new designs. It is a success. The first ones released are "gold" investments especially with the orange box signed on each side with interlocking.

With ..."de toujours", a series of Carrés is born, created for young women who love to immerse themselves in a modern way in the sweet past of their mother, grandmother or great-grandmother.
Since the year 2000, borders have gradually disappeared in favor of full-square designs.
New designers contribute their talent to the creation of new drawings... iconoclastic drawings that are often very funny! in colors of incredible brightness and cheerfulness.
There are more and more new formats, a headache for the author!
The exceptional embroidered or sequined Carrés are interspersed with classic creations. The same goes for the Hermès Editeur Artist Carrés. Always up to date, the Carrés reinterpreted by graphic superpositions on old designs. On the other hand, the treatments according to artisanal techniques of dyeing and treating silk: Arashi, Bandhini, Indigo, Surteint and Wash correspond to a period or a stage in the creations of the Hermès Carrés.
It seemed interesting to me to draw up a chronology of the labels sewn on the back of the Carrés
This remains approximate but objectively reflects the publication date of the Carré
